The Government welcomes the UNSC decision to expand the Verification Mission mandate to support compliance with JEP issued judgements

On 11th May, the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) adopted the resolution that adds, to the mandate of the United Nations Verification Mission in Colombia, the task of verifying compliance with the sanctions imposed by the Special Jurisdiction for Peace (JEP). At the request of President Iván Duque, and in compliance with the 2016 Agreement between the Government and the former FARC guerrilla, this resolution expands the current mandate of the Mission so that it supports the verification of compliance and implementation of the judgments issued by the JEP.

Likewise, the Resolution provides for the coordination role of the Presidential Council for Stabilization and Consolidation so that these sanctions, which have a mainly restorative and reparative nature, are aligned with the comprehensive implementation of the Agreement, in particular with the Development Plans with Territorial Approach - PDET. Presidential Counsellor Archila mentioned "this is a great addition to the Truth, Justice, Reparation and No Repetition system." The Resolution presented by the UK was supported unanimously by the members of the Council.

Counsellor Archila presented the latest advances in the Peace with Legality policy.

President Iván Duque participated in the World Leaders' Summit on Climate

President Duque proposes three actions to address climate change at the World Leaders Summit on Climate convened by the President of the United States, Joe Biden. President Duque spoke at the end of April and made a called to address climate change proposing three actions: signing the agreement of global leaders to protect nature, capitalise credit institutions and establish debt-swap mechanisms for those performing this task. He highlighted “A country like Colombia represents 0.6% of greenhouse gas emissions worldwide. However, it is among the 20 most vulnerable countries and most threatened by the effects of climate change.”

The Government of Colombia has been working on a comprehensive environmental protection policy in compliance with the principle of 'producing in conserving and conserving in producing'. This policy considers sustainable and resilient development, the conservation of our biodiversity and the participation of citizens in environmental issues. Colombia's approach to the Venezuelan migrant crisis seminar

Join us on 26th May at 2pm (Irish time) for an insightful event about the Temporary Protective Status granted to Venezuelan migrants by the Colombian government. The conversation, organised in collaboration with the Irish Centre for Human Rights from NUI Galway will include the opening remarks of Vice Minister for Multilateral Affairs of Colombia, Ms Adriana Mejía Hernández, and the participation of the Director of Migración Colombia, Mr Juan Francisco Espinosa, GOAL Global Director for Latin America and the Caribbean, Mr Bernard McCaul and the Director of the Human Rights Centre at Universidad del Rosario (Bogotá) Dr María Teresa Palacios Sanabria. The event will look into this historic regularisation scheme, which represents an evolution of the existing migratory policies, aimed at finding pragmatic and humanitarian solutions and could mean a global reference on the implementation of the international migratory framework. Please note this is a public event and it does not require registration, click here to join.
